Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur from Cairo: is a second pyramid day worth it?
Updated October 17, 2026 · 7 min read
Yes, a second pyramid day is worth it if you want to understand how pyramid building developed; no, if Giza already exhausted your interest in archaeology. Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur are not spare versions of the same photograph. Together they show experimentation, royal burial landscapes and the ancient capital behind the monuments.
UNESCO treats the pyramid fields from Giza to Dahshur and Memphis as one World Heritage property. Saqqara contains Djoser’s Step Pyramid, while Dahshur includes the Bent and Red pyramids associated with Sneferu. Memphis contributes the remains of the city that gave the necropolises their political and religious setting.
What each stop contributes
Saqqara is the strongest single reason to go. The Step Pyramid complex shows monumental stone architecture before the smooth-sided form familiar at Giza. The site also contains tombs and material from many periods, so it rewards a guide who can choose rather than simply point.
Memphis is different: expect scattered remains and statuary, not a preserved city centre. Its value is context. This was a major ancient capital and cult centre, but visitors expecting streets and palaces standing intact may find the stop modest.
Dahshur makes the development visible. The Bent Pyramid changes angle partway up; the Red Pyramid presents a successful smooth-sided form. The landscape usually feels less dominated by the single iconic viewpoint that shapes a Giza visit.
Giza plus Saqqara and Memphis in one day
The Pyramids of Giza, Sphinx, Saqqara and Memphis tour lasts eight hours, starts at €64.88 and has 3,701 reviews. It is the practical choice if you have one archaeology day and want the broad sequence.
The compromise is depth. Four named areas, road time, entry and lunch leave limited room for tomb interiors or slow observation. Check whether entrance fees are included and exactly which parts of Saqqara are planned. “Saqqara” in a title does not mean every tomb or pyramid on the site.
A dedicated southern-sites day
If you have already seen Giza, choose a route focused on Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur. The Sakkara, Memphis and Dahshur pyramids trip starts at €73.97. Another flexible option covering those sites starts at €48.51, but its title lists several variants; read which places your selected option actually includes.
Check the Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur options
A private car and guide are useful here because the sites are spread out and interpretation matters. “Private” should still be checked: confirm whether it applies to the vehicle, guide and itinerary, and whether you may spend longer at one site by shortening another.
Who should skip the second day?
Skip it if your main pleasure is the famous Giza skyline, if long road days drain you or if you have only two days in Cairo and also want Historic Cairo and a major museum. Saqqara can involve uneven ground and substantial walking; ask the operator about the actual route if mobility is limited, and have any accessibility requirement confirmed before booking.
Families should choose fewer stops rather than assuming children will value the archaeological sequence. A focused Saqqara visit can be more successful than a checklist of three sites and a tired final hour.
What to confirm before paying
Check the named sites, entry fees, pyramid interiors, lunch, pickup area and guide language. Interior access can change and not every ticket includes it. Do not infer from a pyramid photograph that the booking includes entering that structure.
Take water, sun protection and footwear suitable for dust and uneven surfaces. These are exposed archaeological areas, not a continuous indoor attraction. For current access rules, use the booking page and official monument information close to your visit.

Our recommendation
After Giza, book a dedicated Saqqara–Memphis–Dahshur day if the evolution of the pyramids interests you. If time is short, the eight-hour Giza combination gives the clearest overview, though it will be brisk. Of the three southern stops, protect time at Saqqara first, then Dahshur; treat Memphis as essential context rather than the day’s most spectacular remains.
